28 Years Later was filmed back-to-back with its follow-up The Bone Temple, and a theory about a new type of infected could have major implications for the upcoming sequel. Warning: spoilers ahead!
Danny Boyle and Alex Garland have reunited for the 28 Days Later sequel, taking place – you guessed it – 28 years after the rage virus ravaged the UK.
In the new horror movie, a group of survivors have made their own community on an island separate from the mainland by a causeway. As for the zombies, they have evolved.
On one end, you have Slow Lows, the least threatening type of infected. On the other, there’s the Alphas, ghastly brick sh*thouses resulting from the virus acting as steroids. But we may have been introduced to another strain without realizing it.
The baby could spell disaster in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
After Isla helps one of the infected give birth to a baby, presumably fathered by the Alpha named Samson, Spike notices that the newborn appears to be human, having somehow skipped the virus in the womb.
As such, he delivers the girl to be raised on his home island before heading back to the mainland alone. However, what if the baby is just another form of infected, like a “Carrier” or a “Purebred”?
The child wasn’t bitten or exposed through contact – she was born from the virus. She might display more human characteristics, but her blood could still carry the rage.
As said by one Redditor, “I think there’s a good chance it will be a 28 Weeks Later style carrier infection, but who knows.”
That makes her a potential biological weapon without even knowing it, and we could see this have drastic consequences on the survivors in The Bone Temple.
Now, this could go one of two ways, the least concerning being that she’s the key to finding a cure. Or, if it follows in the footsteps of the rest of the horror franchise, the baby could unintentionally spark an outbreak on the island.
Another viewer asked, “Does the baby carry the virus? Could this force the secluded island community to flee to the mainland if the infection spreads? Or is the baby something else entirely – perhaps the key to a cure?”
A third added, “Wouldn’t it be crazy if the baby just drools and the saliva drops on someone and immediately causes a ‘crow blood eyedrop’ scene type of chaos on the island.”
“There has to be something up with the baby… how do two infected make a normal baby? DNA wise,” a fourth chimed in. “I know the doctor said the placenta but like on a micro level [that] doesn’t make sense.”
For now, all we can do is speculate, as The Bone Temple plot details are being kept largely under wraps. What we do know is that Alex Garland has penned the script, but Boyle is only serving as producer, handing over directing duties to Nia DaCosta.
