5 most disgusting moments in Trainwreck: Poop Cruise, from “poop lasagna” to soggy sandwiches

Netflix has saved the best ‘till last with its newest trio of Trainwreck documentaries, with the third episode – Poop Cruise – diving into the literal sh*tshow that was the 2013 Carnival ship disaster. If you have a queasy stomach, you may want to look away now.

Trainwreck is a documentary series unpacking high-profile scandals. The latest batch has covered the Travis Scott Astroworld tragedy and late Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s downfall, but now Poop Cruise has docked – and it’s easily the most disgusting entry yet.

The infamous “Poop Cruise” set sail on February 7, 2013, when the Carnival Triumph left Galveston, Texas, for a four-day trip to Mexico. Two days in, an engine room fire knocked out the ship’s power, leaving it stranded in the Gulf of Mexico. With no propulsion and limited electricity, conditions quickly spiralled.

Toilets overflowed, air conditioning failed, and food supplies ran low, turning the ship into a reeking, sewage-soaked nightmare for over 4,200 passengers and crew. Needless to say, Trainwreck: Poop Cruise doesn’t skimp on the nastier details – we’ve picked out the grimmest of all.

The red bag fiasco

If you’ve heard of the Poop Cruise, you’ve heard of the red bags. After discovering the power outage meant the toilets onboard no longer flushed, crew members scrambled to come up with a solution.

Soon enough, an announcement was made, one that left passengers horrified: pee in the shower and poop in red biohazard bags. Yes, really. The red bags were handed to all guests, who were told to leave their deposits in the corridor bins.

Passengers tried to hold it in, with some even popping Imodium to try and slow things down. But when they became stranded for far longer than expected, they had no choice but to give in, turning hallways into makeshift latrines with an unforgettable stench.

The “poop lasagna”

Not every passenger went down this route, however. As is revealed in the Netflix documentary, some decided to simply use the unflushable toilets, which created a rather unique issue.

Abhi, a chef on the cruise ship, describes the moment they realized they were going to be stranded for another few days. He needed the toilet toilet, and desperately searched for somewhere to go.

“I found this public restroom and I go inside, and it was the nastiest thing I have ever seen in my life,” he says. “People were covering the poop with the toilet paper and then again pooping on top of it. So it was a layer after layer after layer – it was like a lasagna.”

No doubt none of us will be eating lasagna for a very long time.

The soggy sandwiches

The food situation wasn’t much better. Abhi describes how the kitchen had to immediately throw away any perishable food due to the power outage, leaving them with limited resources to work with.

The day after the fire, the team started to make sandwiches with onions, tomatoes, and whatever else they could find for the 3,000 hungry passengers.

Ashley, one of the unlucky travelers, says in the new documentary, “You would have to wait in line for two hours. But when you got up to see what it was that you were waiting on, it was like a soggy bread and tomato-lettuce sandwich.”

The open bar

What’s disgusting about an open bar? In a normal environment, nothing – but on the Poop Cruise, it led to flying feces, public sex, and all-round carnage.

It began on day two of the four days the ship was stranded, when the crew made the decision to open the bar and offer free alcohol to raise morale. In retrospect, it was a terrible idea.

Soon enough, passengers were drowning their sorrows. Crew member Stephen says in the Netflix documentary, “Everything was going great, but then there’s people urinating off the side of the ship.”

“People were throwing their red bags on the lifeboats,” adds Abhi, who recalls seeing one person throw a (used) bag off the ship, only for it to fly back and land in someone’s lap.

Another passenger named Jayme saw a newlywed couple having sex at the bar. “There was no, ‘You want a sheet to put over you?’ No, they were right there.” As the situation escalated, eventually the crew decided to close the bar – probably for the best.

The tipping point

The final (and arguably grisliest) moment of the Poop Cruise arrived on the last day. When a tug boat finally came to drag them back home, it caused the ship to tip – and the sewage went with it.

At this stage, the showers were already overflowing and the toilets were filled to the brim with human waste. “Imagine everything that goes into a toilet… it’s just everywhere,” says Jayme.

From the bedrooms to the kitchens, the entire place was flooded with brown water. “You’d be walking down the hallway and all of a sudden squish, squish, squish… we were in excrement,” says fellow passenger Devon.

Yep, that really happened. To learn more about what went down once the doomed voyage made it back to the mainland, Trainwreck: Poop Cruise is streaming on Netflix now.
