Knight of the Seven Kingdoms showrunner Ira Parker reveals that a brief scene in Episode 5 ties Duncan to a Game of Thrones fan favorite.

Episode 5 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms played out in dramatic style, as Ser Duncan and his brave band of brothers battled Prince Aerion’s team in the Trial of Seven.

Those fight scenes were interrupted by a lengthy flashback that introduced young Dunk, detailed his love interest’s tragic demise, and ended with him first forming a bing with future mentor Ser Arlan.

As well as providing Dunk with important back-story, those same scenes feature an Easter egg for longtime Game of Thrones fans that hint at something George R.R. Martin has previously revealed in real life…

Dunk’s connection to Brienne of Tarth explained

Dunk Junior is introduced robbing dead soldiers on an empty battlefield, so that he and his beloved Rafe can escape the squalor of Flea’s Bottom, and pay for passage towards the Free Cities.

They walk and talk while headings back to King’s Landing, on exactly the same route that Brienne of Tarth took when Jamie Lannister sent her to Sansa Stark.

Podrick Payne became her squire, and in Episode 5 of Game of Thrones Season 4, they travelled the exact same path as Dunk and Rafe in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 5.

That parallel was intentional, as author George R.R. Martin has previously told fans that Brienne is Dunk’s descendant, and shorunner Ira Parker told Business Insider that he likes the idea of those distant relatives crossing paths generations apart.

Indeed, both scenes were shot at the same location, with Parker adding: “It’s the exact same road in Belfast, same trees and everything. There’s no attention drawn to it, but anyone who’s a deep, deep fan of the show, hopefully, will pick up on that.”
