A band that is cited as an “influence” for an AI-assisted group says it’s “insulting” after being overtaken by them in listenership after just two months.

AI assists have been around in music production for quite some time. Drake even used AI verses from Tupac and Snoop Dogg during his rap beef with Kendrick Lamar. Though, backlash over it made him remove the song from different platforms.

Even still, there are AI-generated and AI-assisted artists popping up all the time, muddying the waters for fans who think they’ve stumbled onto a brand-new band with a fresh sound.

It has also complicated things for pre-existing bands who have been cited as influences for these AI-assisted groups. That includes Holding Absence, which has around 1 million monthly listeners on Spotify and doesn’t use AI.

Bleeding Verse passes Holding Absence on Spotify

The alt-rock band from Cardiff has been cited as an influence for Bleeding Verse – a band that popped up in the summer of 2025.

Bleeding Verse openly admits to using “AI-assisted instrumentation and vocals” too. “Human lyrics, turned to songs with AI,” their Spotify says.

Bleeding Verse has less than 2,000 followers on Instagram but has eclipsed 897,000 listeners on Spotify. That is 40,000 more than Holding Absence, who do have close to 100,000 followers on Instagram.

Holding Absence’s Lucas Woodland has also warned that bands will “stop existing” if the AI versions are better supported.

“So, an AI “band” who cite us as an influence (ie, it’s modelled off our music) have just overtaken us on Spotify, in only TWO months. It’s shocking, it’s disheartening, it’s insulting – most importantly – it’s a wake up call,” he posted on X.

“Oppose AI music, or bands like us stop existing.”

Some fans were quick to rally around Woodland’s message, with some unaware of the AI usage in Bleeding Verse’s music.

“If this is about BV, I was so disappointed. Really liked the sound that came up on my Apple Music suggestions,” one said. “I genuinely believe the listeners are fake, nobody in their right mind would want to listen to AI slop,” another said.
