Anthem is now officially dead. The game’s servers were taken down on January 12, 2026, marking an end to BioWare’s troubled online game.
EA’s Anthem hit store shelves on February 22, 2019, launching across PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Coming from BioWare – the acclaimed developers behind the likes of Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and even the first two Baldur’s Gate games – expectations were certainly high.
The online, third-person looter-shooter struggled out of the gate, however. With limited content, a punishing grind, and an uninspired story, it quickly floundered.
Now, just shy of seven years on from its turbulent release, Anthem’s story has drawn to a close. Servers have officially been switched offline, meaning the game is no longer playable.
Anthem servers taken offline
Hot on the heels of its troubled launch, BioWare assured fans it had intentions to “reinvent the core gameplay loop with clear goals, motivating challenges, and progression with meaningful rewards.”
That blog post update came in February 2020. A year later, by February 2021, all work on the game had come to a screeching halt.
On July 3, 2025, EA issued one final update on the status of Anthem. Sales of in-game currency were halted, and it was announced that the game’s final day would be January 12, 2026.
Now, we’re here, and servers have indeed been switched off, meaning Anthem is no longer accessible. Much like Concord, XDefiant, and MultiVersus, Anthem can no longer be played in any capacity. There’s no single-player or offline component; thus, the entire experience is now locked away for good.
No refunds are being issued, given the game was available for almost seven years and often sold at a considerable discount.
As for what comes next for BioWare, the team is pivoting back to Mass Effect, seemingly continuing the mainline story after the offshoot, Andromeda, was met with a mixed reception in 2017.
