Ubisoft has reportedly threatened legal action against Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag star Matt Ryan after the actor seemingly confirmed a remake is on the way.
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remains one of the best entries in Ubisoft’s long-running series. More than a decade after its original release, calls for a full remake have only grown louder, and recent comments from the game’s lead actor have pushed fan speculation into overdrive.
During a fan convention in late June 2025, Edward Kenway’s voice actor Matt Ryan hinted that a remake was on the horizon. His comments quickly went viral, but they may have come at a cost.
Black Flag VA threatened with legal action
Ryan, who voiced Edward Kenway in the original 2013 title, added fuel to the remake fire while signing a poster for a fan, asking if they had beaten Black Flag. When the fan said yes, Ryan responded:
“Well, you may have to beat it again… there’s a reason I say that, but I can’t say anything,” while shooting a knowing look at the camera. However, in a new video uploaded to X, the voice actor has now admitted that his viral comments have landed him in hot water.
“I got into trouble for that, actually,” said Ryan when asked about the Black Flag remake. “They got quite litigious with me, so I’ve been told not to talk about that.”
Ubisoft has yet to confirm a remake is in the works. Still, it has remained one of the most requested titles for a full overhaul, especially in the wake of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which showcases the kind of visual fidelity fans can now expect from the series.
With leaks, actor teases, and now reported legal threats, all signs point to something big on the horizon. Whether Ubisoft plans to reveal it at Gamescom 2025 or hold off remains to be seen.
