The first trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash is epic in every sense of the word, but if you watch closely, there are a few hints that the threequel will kill off a major character.

In 2009, James Cameron became the box office king of the world with Avatar, which is still the highest-grossing movie of all time today. Thirteen years later, Avatar: The Way of Water made over $2 billion, making it the third-biggest movie in history.

Will Fire and Ash continue the director’s box office streak? It remains to be seen, but one thing is clear from the first trailer: he has taken visual effects to another level (again), and the next chapter will be an intense expansion of Pandora and the Na’vi’s culture.

Specifically, we’ll meet the villainous Varang and the Ash People (and Quaritch is back, and perhaps even allied with them). That puts one character at risk: Jake Sully.

Jake Sully could die in Avatar: Fire and Ash

The trailer doesn’t give much away about exactly what will happen in Avatar: Fire and Ash. Payakan is back, there appears to be paparazzi on Pandora, we’ll meet the Wind Traders, and Kiri will have a tense encounter with Varang, who tells her, “Your goddess has no dominion here.”

However, fans are worried about Jake. In the trailer, he tells Neytiri that she can’t “live in hate.” What if he has a rematch with Quaritch, he dies, and then she needs to contend with her rage and her husband’s dying wish?

There’s quite a lot of Lo’ak in the trailer, and considering Cameron has confirmed he’ll be the narrator in Avatar 3 – a role previously held by Jake – that could suggest that Jake’s arc is coming to an end.

In another clip, we see Jake embracing Spider, even though he saved Quarritch at the end of the second film, so it looks like Fire and Ash is tying up some loose ends.

“I really think we’re at the point where Jake is gonna die but Quaritch will die with him,” one user predicted.

“Jake has spent sixteen years fighting who he is and who he is meant to become and he is finally coming to accept it. You can see it in every aspect. His outfit, his war paint, his walk. This is a man who is done running and has accepted who his family and Pandora needs him to be,” another wrote.

“I don’t think that Big Jim has the balls to kill Tuk honestly… Jake Sully on the other hand,” a third posted.
