Amazon Web Services’ outage prompted a number of Bored Apes NFTs to disappear from view, so owners couldn’t view their expensive images.

On October 20, Amazon Web Services (AWS) suffered a massive outage to a number of servers. This meant that a lot of online services, including games like Fortnite, banking applications, and even apps like Duolingo, were taken offline for a good while.

The disruption, which was reported by over 8 million DownDetector users, also hit smart beds and NFTs.

The infamous Bored Ape NFTs, which were once snapped up for millions by a number of celebrities and online influencers, were hit as the disruption affected platforms like OpenSea. This meant that NFT owners were not able to view their tokens, even though they remained in their accounts.

Bored Ape NFTs affected by AWS outage

As per Futurism, NFT owners were met with an error message of “Cannot load image,” as well as their specific token name being mentioned.

“This ERC-721 NFT is not accessible due to an ongoing Amazon Web Services outage,” one said.

OpenSea responds to AWS outage

OpenSea’s Chris Maddern addressed the issue on X (formelry Twitter) by apologizing to users. “opensea.io is currently up, however a number of upstream providers that power parts of OpenSea (including data storage, and blockchain indexing) are experiencing significant outages due to the AWS incident,” Maddern posted.

“For the past several hours opensea.io has been intermittently unavailable, and/or experiencing a higher than usual failure rate. We hate it when OpenSea isn’t rock solid for you, and know that we’re doing all we can to bring us back to normal operations as soon as possible.”

As noted, many online services were impacted by AWS’s outage, with the wildest one being the smart beds.

Some users reported that their beds were stuck in upright positions and were unable to move. Eight Sleep responded by confirming a ‘outage mode’ was being distributed.
