A Baldur’s Gate TV show is in the works at HBO, and it’s set to take place after the events of Baldur’s Gate 3. However, Larian Studios isn’t involved.
HBO has announced its plans to bring Baldur’s Gate to the silver screen. A new TV series is officially underway, and it’s set to continue right where the last game left us.
Craig Mazin, current showrunner on HBO’s The Last of Us, is set to lead the project after wrapping Season 3 of the post-apocalyptic adaptation.
Larian Studios, creators of the best-selling and Game of the Year award-winning RPG, will not be involved, however.
HBO announces Baldur’s Gate TV series
Deadline broke news of the Baldur’s Gate TV series on February 5, 2026. HBO reportedly has plans for it to be an ongoing show, with Mazin leading the charge as a lifelong Dungeons & Dragons fan.
Set after the events of Baldur’s Gate 3, the show is set to continue the tale with a mix of existing and new characters. This ultimately means one particular ending will have to be made canon, which is sure to ruffle some feathers, given there are thousands of distinct endings to the 2023 game.
Mazin has already shown interest in recruiting Baldur’s Gate 3 voice actors for the TV show, though in what capacity remains unknown. We could see certain cast members reprising their roles in live action, perhaps, or others simply appearing in brief cameos.
Mazin has done much the same throughout The Last of Us, with the likes of Troy Baker and Ashley Johsnon (Joel and Ellie in the games) appearing as different characters in the show, while Merle Dandridge and Jeffrey Wright stepped back into the shoes of Marlene and Isaac Dixon, respectively.
“After putting nearly 1,000 hours into the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created,” Mazin said.
“I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vince and his gifted team adapted it.”
Larian Studios not involved with HBO’s Baldur’s Gate TV show
Moments after Deadline broke news of the Baldur’s Gate show, we got some additional intel on X (formerly Twitter).
Geoff Keighley was in contact with Larian Studios, who confirmed to him “they have no involvement in the series.” This means none of the developers who worked on Baldur’s Gate 3, including the writing staff who established many of the most popular characters, will not have a say in how the story continues on-screen.
“Imma bout to crash out on main,” Michael Douse, Larian Publishing Director, said when sharing the news.
“I’ve spent the last 8-10 years of my life with the writers and creators of Baldur’s Gate 3,” they continued. “They’re the most incredible storytellers and creators in the space. Only hope is that they get both the credit deserved, and the characters are represented at the same level as the game.”
While not replying with any detail, Douse also chose to engage with a number of comments that could’ve been ignored.
“How are they allowed to do this if y’all didn’t give them permission?” One X user asked. “I can’t imagine how this must feel for you guys,” another chimed in. “I plead the fifth,” the dev responded to both.
