Battlefield 6 has been officially revealed with a leaked October release date, and it’s coming at a time when Call of Duty players are severely unimpressed with the crazy crossover skins.
While games crossing over with movie and TV franchises wasn’t an entirely new concept, Fortnite revolutionized it by bringing hundreds of characters from pop culture as playable skins.
Call of Duty followed suit, and the crossovers have only gotten more wild as time goes on, with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, cel-shaded Beavis and Butt-Head, and American Dad skins considered several steps too far.
Battlefield 6 dropped its cinematic reveal trailer on July 24, showing a modern military aesthetic with realistic uniforms, weapons, and vehicles. It looks like the grounded shooter that many have been waiting for, but whether it maintains that identity through its live-service seasons remains to be seen.
While there’s a lot of excitement for DICE’s new shooter, there’s a big worry that it’s going to follow in CoD’s footsteps with colorful outfits that don’t match the milsim aesthetic, so fans are begging DICE not to include them.
Battlefield 6 players worried crossover skins will ruin the game
“You have a perfect opportunity to create these cosmetics that fit into the game’s visual appearance, we are tired of glowing alien skins and weird crossovers that look like eyesores,” said a Reddit user in a popular post on the Battlefield subreddit.
“The last thing I want to see is neon guns and ridiculous flashy outfits with soldiers spewing cringeworthy one-liners,” agreed another user.
The sentiment is the same on X/Twitter. “I pray that they stick the landing this time AND don’t destroy the game with stupid cosmetics ala CoD,” said HiddenXperia. “BF6 has a real chance to dominate.”
“Give us that classic Battlefield *feeling* and you’ll crush. The bar is low,” said another, showing American Dad’s Roger the Alien in Black Ops 6.
The thing is, these wacky skins sell, or Activision simply wouldn’t bother putting them in the game. However, CoD is reportedly dialing back crossover skins, admitting they’re “printing money” but “they hear the criticism that the game is starting to look stupid.”
It’s worth remembering that Black Ops 6 launched with a grounded military aesthetic and the crazy crossovers came later, so we’ll have to wait and see what EA and DICE have planned for Battlefield’s post-launch support.
