DICE have confirmed that Battlefield 6 will use AI bots to fill up its lobbies if there aren’t enough players, much to the dismay of fans.
Bots are becoming an increasingly common sight in multiplayer shooters. Warzone has begun using them in its Casual playlists, and they’ve filled Fortnite lobbies that are struggling to reach the 100-player mark for the last few years.
They’re always a controversial topic, as running into an AI enemy that doesn’t put up a proper fight can take you out of the game, but they also help reduce matchmaking times. Now, it’s been confirmed that the bot soldiers from 2042 will return in Battlefield 6.
Controversial bots return in Battlefield 6
In an interview with Taiwanese outlet GNN that has been translated, DICE devs were asked about whether or not the hotly anticipated shooter would include any AI modes. Development Director Anna Narrevik revealed that bots will appear in the core BF6 modes, with the aim of keeping waiting times down.
“The way the game uses AI is that when the server is not full, AI will be added to fill the gap,” said Development Director Anna Narrevik. “The purpose of our game design is to allow as many players as possible to play the game at the same time.”
Although the use of bots will no doubt make searching for a match smoother, especially at times when there are fewer players online, many fans aren’t happy with the news.
“I’d rather play in a half-full server than one with 32 players and 32 bots,” said one player on Reddit.
“There is zero f***ing satisfaction to killing bots,” wrote another. “This is terrible news… Hopefully, there will be vanilla servers in Portal with bots disabled.”
This comes just after the announcement that there will be no server browser in BF6, meaning that players will be automatically placed into a match instead of being able to pick their own. Many felt that adding the feature would reduce the need for bots altogether.
“This p***es me off. Give us a server browser so we can pick what servers we want to play on,” posted another angry fan.
