Details are emerging about Big Bang Theory spinoff Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, which features a Sheldon invention that causes “multiverse Armageddon,” and brings back beloved characters.

Big Bang Theory is the gift that keeps giving, as although the sitcom ended more than five years ago, it’s stayed alive via prequels and spinoffs.

Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy’s First Wedding stayed true to TBBT’s comedy roots, but a forthcoming sequel series will be leaning into sci-fi.

HBO Max has given a series order to Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, which is a futuristic story that revolves around characters from the past.

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe features “alternate” versions of Big Bang characters

We already knew that Kevin Sussman would be returning as comic book aficionado Stuart Bloom in the new series, thanks to that title. But now a synopsis has been released, which suggests where the story will go.

In Stuart Fails to Save the World, Bloom is “tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise, geologist friend Bert, and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke. Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we’ve come to know and love from The Big Bang Theory.”

That means Lauren Lapkus returns as Denise, Brian Posehn is back as Bert, and John Ross Bowie will reprise the role of Barry.

But is also opens the door for the likes of Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Jonathan Galecki, Simon Helberg, Mayim Bialik, and Kunal Nayyar to cameo. Though with this being a mutliverse story, their characters could appear, but be played by different actors. Or even both. Meaning the possibilities are endless.

Big Bang Theory creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady will executive produce alongside X2 and Incredible Hulk scribe Zack Penn, with Lorre saying in a statement: “I wanted to do something radical that would take me out of my comfort zone. Something the characters on The Big Bang Theory would have loved, hated, and argued about.”

Prady added, “The process of writing this show with Chuck and Zak has been damn fun, and I’m certain that joy will come through the screen. Putting characters we loved from The Big Bang Theory into a complex science fiction story with the kind of mythology that those characters love while maintaining the comedic elements is incredibly satisfying.”

There’s no word yet on an air date, nor whether the series will be exclusive to streaming or also available on linear TV.
