Call of Duty fans are quitting Black Ops 6 over the game’s new cel-shaded maps, with some calling it a “horrendous” choice.

Over the years, Call of Duty has experimented with a few different ideas for maps. There have been interactive moments that change the layout of a map, reworked versions of classic battlegrounds, and event versions as well.

The devs have also started pumping out cel-shaded variants too, taking popular maps and making them look cartoon-ish. This fit in nicely with the CODToons event and American Dad crossover, prompting a raft of cel-shaded maps.

However, they haven’t gone down all that well with players. Some have decided to quit the game for good as a result.

Cel-shaded COD maps have fans quitting

Complaints were leveled about the cel-shaded maps on July 21, with Redditor s0und7 calling them “atrocious” and saying that they can’t see enemy players.

Fellow fans quickly agreed. “I don’t understand CODs obsession with cell shading, it’s f*cking horrendous and doesn’t belong in COD. I’ve given up with this game now, which is a shame,” one replied.

“I gave up on BO6 and returned to MW2023. The right choice, it’s such a solid MP,” another said. “I tried to play it, but its just not even worth it for the rewards, having to play those maps is just an awful experience,” added another. “Haven’t played in almost 2 weeks and it feels f*ckin great,” another commented.

Those who have stuck around with Warzone have also asked if the “cartoon effect” can be turned off, as it’s giving them headaches.

Some players have stated that they’ll return to multiplayer when CODToons is over and the regular maps are back in full focus. However, who knows if the maps will return again in the future.
