Get ready for another race to the finish line, because Brad Pitt’s F1 movie is officially getting a sequel.
Directed by Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski, the Apple Studios movie follows disgraced driver Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) as he’s recruited by an old friend to save a failing F1 team, APXGP.
His unconventional racing tactics and rivalry with his rookie teammate Joshua Pierce (Damson Idris) livens things up both on and off the track, while they race against real-life figures including Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris, and Max Verstappen.
F1 raked in $633 million worldwide and even bagged itself a best picture nomination at the Oscars, so it should come as no surprise that a sequel is in development.
F1 sequel is in the works, but Brad Pitt isn’t confirmed to return yet
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that an F1 sequel is being developed when speaking to the BBC at an Academy Awards event in Los Angeles. However, he didn’t divulge any further information on whether Pitt and Idris will reprise their roles as the APXGP drivers.
Given that the first film hinges on their dynamic, it would seem odd if at least one of them didn’t return for the sequel. But, Bruckheimer did say that Pitt would “of course” have a say in casting. The first film was produced by Pitt alongside Bruckheimer, Kosinski, and Hamilton.
Bruckheimer also admitted that he was “surprised” by F1’s recent recognition during the awards season, particularly after it had a difficult road to the big screen during the 2024 Hollywood strikes.
“It was a long journey to get the movie made because we had to endure a couple of strikes – but in the end, the movie entertained audiences around the world,” he explained. “I never worked with Brad Pitt before and it’s really a thrill to work with Brad.”
