Bungie has delayed the next major Destiny 2 update by three months, much to the dismay of the community. This schedule shakeup comes just days out from the launch of the studio’s other live-service shooter, Marathon.
The Halo devs are fast-approaching the launch of Marathon, a game they began development on in 2021. The extraction shooter is set for a Server Slam across February 26 – March 2, with the full game releasing days later on March 5.
In the lead-up, Destiny 2 output has slowed considerably. From major annual expansions culminating in The Final Shape, a DLC that paid off 10 years of storytelling, Guardians haven’t had a ton to sink their teeth into since.
Renegades was the last expansion, having launched on December 2, 2025, with a Star Wars flair, but it ultimately did little to move the needle. Now, the game’s next update – not an expansion, an update – has been pushed back three months, sounding alarms for those in the community.
Destiny 2’s Shadow and Order update was originally scheduled to release on March 3, 2026. Now, devs have announced its new release date of June 9, 2026, a full three months back.
On one hand, it clears the schedule for Marathon, meaning Bungie won’t have to compete with itself for attention. On the other, it gives devs more time to ‘expand’ the update, they claimed.
Shadow and Order is “undergoing major revisions,” including changes to what was already planned, along with broadening the scope to include new “sizable quality-of-life updates,” Bungie explained on X (formerly Twitter).
As a result of the change in scope and the delay, the update is also set to be renamed.
Already announced for the update are the likes of Pantheon 2.0, along with Tiered Gear for every single Raid and Dungeon in the game. Before we get to it, though, remaining Destiny 2 players will still have Guardian Games in March and Iron Banner throughout April, no changes there.
However, many in the community are arguing that the delay will ultimately do more harm than good, given the decline in interest of late. At its peak on Steam three years ago, Destiny 2 was soaring with over 300,000 concurrent players. Today, it sits with fewer than 14,000 concurrents at its daily peak.
Now, with months to wait for the next meaningful update, again, not a content drop per se, but an update, many are frustrated with the state of affairs.
“These were all things people were begging for half a year ago,” content creator Matics said on X. “To still hear nothing about the roadmap or state of the game and the big picture plans for the franchise is so frustrating.”
A [three-month] delay for an ‘update’, not even an Expansion is… very alarming,” content creator Fitzy added.
“I’ve taken a 6+ month break from Destiny and feel like I’ve missed nothing,” another player chimed in.
Meanwhile, the reception is decidedly worse over on the Destin subreddit, with hardcore players questioning the longevity of the title, especially in the wake of Marathon’s launch.
