Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter Marathon briefly came with the unintended bonus of a download of Destiny 2 after pre-orders for the former opened.
The studio’s looter shooter, the base version of which is free-to-play, was automatically installing itself on Steam users’ profiles after pre-ordering Marathon, Bungie said in a January 20 X/Twitter post.
The exact cause of the unintended package deal wasn’t explained, although Bungie has confirmed that the issue is now resolved.
Destiny 2 issue also resolved
As well as decoupling Marathon and Destiny 2 on Steam, Bungie also confirmed it had resolved an issue with Destiny 2 players being unable to claim a paid-for Marathon-themed cosmetic bundle.
An Exotic Ghost Shell, Ship, and Sparrow are included in the pack and should now be claimable by visiting the Special Deliveries Kiosk in the Tower.
Following a wobbly initial reveal that resulted in lukewarm first impressions from playtesters and the discovery of plagiarised artwork, Bungie delayed Marathon from its original September 2025 release date.
Receptions were far more positive following a soft re-reveal of the shooter at the tail-end of 2025, with footage sporting improved visuals and gameplay elements.
Since pre-orders went live, renewed interest prompted the title to rocket up Steam’s top sellers chart, peaking at fifth place, above Warframe and below Marvel Rivals.
