A man from Chicago is going viral after finally reuniting with his dog, who’d been missing for the last decade.

51-year-old Edmon Lighthall is at the center of a heartwarming story ten years in the making, and one that highlights the importance of microchipping one’s pets.

In 2015, Lighthall’s beloved pet dog, a poodle-doodle mix named Peter, escaped from his backyard. Distraught, he and his family had been searching for Peter for an entire decade… until September 2025.

On September 22, Lighthall got a text message from a pet microchip registry company informing him that Peter’s microchip had recently been scanned.

Elated, he called up Hammond Animal Control, who told him that Peter had been picked up by police while wandering the streets. The next day, he undertook the 45-minute drive to the shelter, where he was reunited with his beloved pup.

“It was absolutely unbelievable,” he described the moment. “I saw Pete. He came out, he greeted me, and it was almost immediate. I felt like he recognized me immediately.”

“…I just felt deeply, a lot, for a long time, that we were inseparable in some way, and somehow this worked out,” he told ABC news.

Lighthall also shared a video from the shelter on TikTok, where a happy Pete can be seen excitedly greeting his long-lost family.

“After a whole decade, I got to bring my dog home,” Lighthall wrote in the video’s caption. “Microchips work. Miracles happen. And sometimes, love really does find its way back.”

Hammond police also emphasized the importance of microchipping, pointing to Pete’s rescue in an official statement.

“This story is a perfect example of why microchipping works,” a spokesperson for the Hammond Police Department spokesperson said. “Even after ten years, this little guy was reunited with his family thanks to that tiny chip.”
