Chinese Helldivers 2 players are banding together in a bid to prevent the Illuminate from taking Equality-on-Sea, the fictional version of Shanghai.

On May 20, the Illuminate invaded Super Earth, bringing squid-like alien enemies to the Helldivers’ home planet. The urban battles have proven so popular that thousands of players from around the world have flocked back to the game in an attempt to push back the incoming invaders.

However, things have been far from smooth, with cities falling left, right, and centre despite global efforts to prevent the ongoing attacks. So far, Shanghai is the last bastion standing between the Illuminate and Prosperity City, Super Earth’s main capital.

While Chinese Helldivers players have been stalwart in their defense of Shanghai, problems began to arise when troopers needed to abandon their posts. After all, even the most elite soldiers need to sleep. This led to the city streets being largely unprotected, giving the Illuminate more opportunities to take more ground.

However, players from around the world have rallied together, with players from York (New York) even abandoning their city to help out their Chinese comrades.

Chinese Helldivers 2 players refuse to let Shanghai fall

According to Helldivers 2’s interactive galaxy map, Shanghai currently has a 96.28% defense rating, with soldiers managing to push the Illumninate to the very fringes of the city. A Megacity status report also notes that the defensive efforts from Chinese players and their allies have taken a toll on the alien forces, weakening their fleet strength.

The heroic effort from Chinese players has also led to memes being shared across social media, with one popular image showing American and Chinese Helldivers locking arms, united in their fight against the space squids.

Western players have also been praising Chinese troops for their coordinated battle tactics. One viral video shared on Reddit showed how Equality-On-Sea players managed to take down a Leviathan spaceship – a feat that is incredibly hard to achieve.

These terrifying alien aircraft have dominated the skies of Super Earth for days, obliterating anything that dares to move with their laser cannons and deploying fresh enemy troops to the city streets. However, one Chinese squad made short work of the monolithic menace, much to the delight of the game’s community.

“Seeing the ‘spotter’ mounted on the end of the gun like a 40k Ork is absolutely beautiful,” wrote one player on the Helldivers reddit page. “Glory to our brothers in China for killing the flying sea food f**k,” responded another.

So far, things are looking good for Shanghai, and with everyone chipping in to assist with the city’s defense, Super Earth has yet to fall to the enemy.
