Earlier this year, Chris Hemsworth left fans worried about Thor’s fate in Avengers: Doomsday after posting an emotional video about the character’s arc in the MCU. In his words, that was “not the intent.”

The video, posted in May, was titled, “Thank You! The Legacy of Thor.” It’s a two-minute featurette charting Hemsworth’s Marvel journey, from his screen test and earliest appearances all the way to Avengers: Endgame and Thor: Love and Thunder.

It already felt a bit suspicious, but the video’s description made it worse, thanking fans for their “passion, cheers, and love” and “making [his] journey through the Marvel Cinematic Universe unforgettable.”

There was an immediate prediction: Thor dies in Doomsday. However, according to the actor, he wasn’t trying to signal a departure from the role – in fact, it’s the beginning of “another chapter.”

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Hemsworth insisted it was “certainly not the intent” to make fans concerned with the video.

“To be honest, my social media team assembled some footage and were like, ‘Oh, this could be cool. We’ll put some stuff up and thank the fans.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, cool. It’s been great,'” he explained.

“So we penned it together, and off I went to do something else. But then I had a few people ask me about it, and someone on my team said, ‘Ugh, we’ve given the wrong impression here.’

“We didn’t do any [damage control]; there was no damage control necessary. But a lot was read into a little. I was [already] off starting another chapter of this character, and this journey has been the biggest part of my career.

“So it was a moment of gratitude, and it wasn’t anything else. But it definitely got misconstrued and perceived in a different way.”

There have been rumors about Thor dying in Doomsday. More specifically, The Cosmic Circus alleged that Thor will reunite with Loki, but he’ll get a “proper send-off in an epic way, with sources pointing to New Avengers (Vol. 3) #32 as the inspiration.”

No spoilers, but let’s just say, “there was lightning and thunder… and then silence.”

The publication also wrote: “Keep in mind, I said they wanted to give Thor a big, proper death in an Avengers movie. That does not automatically imply that Thor is gone forever. Let’s not forget, there’s still a place waiting for Thor at the end of it all.”
