Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 devs have been honoured under the French Order of Arts and Letters, awarding 28 devs who worked on the game the title of Knight.
This is a prestigious honor that has been around since the 1950s, which recognizes significant contributions to arts, literature, and culture. Only a handful of people involved in video games have been inducted in that time, including Rayman creator Michel Ancel and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto.
In a LinkedIn post, the Clair Obscur devs revealed that they were invited to a ceremony at the French Ministry of Culture, where 28 members of the team became the latest to receive the distinction.
28 Clair Obscur devs are now officially Knights
“From Expeditioners to Knights! We were received yesterday at the Ministry of Culture to celebrate our game, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33,” the developer announced in the post. “As such, the members of Sandfall Interactive were awarded the Order of Arts and Letters.
“This distinction honors us, and our deepest thanks go especially to our team who shaped this world and to the millions of players who have brought it to life. We hope that our journey will inspire all those who wish to take the plunge and create their own work.”
During the ceremony, French Minister of Culture Rachida Dati gave a speech detailing why the critically acclaimed RPG had been selected.
“By its scale, by its impact, by the support of the public as well as the critics, your work Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has established itself as a major moment in the history of French video games,” she said, as reported by VGC.
“The first source of pride is that of an entire country which, thanks to you, has seen its creators shine throughout the world. A country that saw each and every one of you take to the stage at The Game Awards and receive nine trophies – an absolute record. And that saw you receive them… in Breton striped shirts and red berets!”
