Classic Xbox Live Arcade title Castle Crashers is still being updated. 17 years on from its release, the fan-favorite indie hit is gearing up for the release of new DLC.

In the heyday of the Xbox 360, there was nothing quite like Xbox Live Arcade. It was through this service that we fell in love with games like Shadow Complex, Super Meat Boy, Limbo, and who could forget Doritos Crash Course?

One of the most popular titles to launch through XBLA, however, was none other than Castle Crashers. The Behemoth’s 2008 release dropped four players into side-scrolling beat ‘em up action with forms of progression we hadn’t quite seen at the time. You wanted to play through one more run to see the next weapon or unlock a more powerful character.

With over 20 million sales later, it’s proven to be the gift that keeps on giving. Castle Crashers is still in the spotlight to this day, and developers are well aware. As such, there’s brand new DLC on the way, yes, even after 17 years, and it’s a real game-changer too.

New Castle Crashers DLC on the way 17 years on from release

Castle Crashers received plenty of DLC packs over the years as new characters, maps, weapons, and features were added. After 17 years, another paid update is on the way, and it brings a deep level of customization.

Known as the Painter Boss Paradise update, Castle Crashers players will soon be able to play as Paint Junior, using artistic weapons to defeat enemies. Not only that, but every existing character and weapon is set to receive new artwork, but that’s far from the main selling point.

What sets the new DLC apart is a character creator toolset. For the first time, Castle Crashers players can upload their own drawings, modelling their perfect hero as they see fit.

Using a template that’s already available, fans can design their dream Castle Crasher, and even make their own weapon to go into battle with.

It’s all set to launch on August 6, 2025, a whopping 6,161 days since the game first launched. It’ll cost $3.99 USD, however, there is a caveat.

As the new character creator tool relies on the Steam Workshop, this DLC is exclusive to PC, at least for the time being. There’s currently no indication of whether a console release may one day follow.
