Cyberpunk 2 lead developer Igor Sarzynski has explained their preference for first-person-only cutscenes, suggesting they provide superior “uninterrupted immersion” over cinematics.
Igor Sarzynski made the comments in a January 22 BlueSky post, where he shared several screenshots taken during the development of Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty DLC.
Reflecting on the game’s development, Sarzynski said that while setting up cutscenes in third person could be visually impressive, immersion ultimately takes priority.
Cyberpunk dev explains why immersion comes first
In his post, Sarzynski said he had “stumbled upon some old pics” from Phantom Liberty’s development, adding that creating cutscenes in the game could be “extremely pleasant” because of how strong the visuals are.
However, he explained that he ultimately valued uninterrupted immersion more, suggesting that keeping the camera in first-person better serves that goal.
While Sarzynski didn’t explicitly reference Cyberpunk 2 by name, his comments suggest the sequel will lean harder into first-person cutscenes over alternatives. The first Cyberpunk and its Phantom Liberty expansion largely avoided pulling the camera away from the player, a design choice often cited as central to the game’s sense of immersion.
In an exchange with another user stating their preference for third-person, Sarzynski responded, “When something is for everyone, then it’s for no one. It’s ok to not vibe with our choices!”
He continued to infer that adding the “choice” of third-person cutscenes “would add 75% scope,” and wouldn’t be feasible. Again, it’s not clear whether Sarzynski was referring to Cyberpunk 2 or speaking in general terms.
