Charlie Cox, of Daredevil fame, voiced Gustave in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – a surprise hit that immediately became one of the best-reviewed games of 2025. But Cox was quick to shoot down praise for his contribution.

Despite being a small studio of only around 30, Sandfall Interactive brought major talent onboard, including Charlie Cox, Andy Serkis, Ben Starr, and Jennifer English.

Cox plays Gustave, the main protagonist of the game, and has (quite rightly) been heaped with praise for his performance. However, Cox said he feels like a “fraud” when receiving praise.

Charlie Cox responds to Clair Obscur’s praise

Speaking at the Washington State Summer Con on June 21, Cox appeared to have responded to a question about Clair Obscur.

“I don’t mean to minimize it in any way,” he said. “Apparently the game is awesome. I’m not a gamer, I have no idea, I haven’t played it. My agent asked me if I wanted to go and do a voiceover. I was in the studio for four hours, maybe.

“People keep saying how amazing it is and congratulations, and I feel like a total fraud.”

Four hours in the studio might feel like an extremely short time, but in Skill Up’s video on the making of Clair Obscur, Jennifer English and Ben Starr praised the devs’ efficiency.

“We recorded so quickly,” said English. “It was the fastest game I’ve ever done as far as, like, the lines per hour. It was sh*tloads.”

Ben Starr continued, “It was a fascinating process because there’s something so incredibly efficient about the decisions that were being made in the room.

“Often it’ll be ‘we don’t know what we want because we’re still exploring it,’ so that’s why it takes a huge amount of time, because of indecision. Whereas this, you turn up and we do something, and Guillaume [Broche, the director] would go ‘that one.’ And he knew exactly what he wanted.”

Even though Cox has downplayed his contribution, he still said he’s “so thrilled for the company” and “so thrilled it did really well.”
