Barstool Sports boss Dave Portnoy usually reviews pizzas, but this time he’s given his verdict on one of the best movies of 2025 – and in his eyes, it’s been “overhyped.”
Portnoy has visited thousands of pizzerias across the US, with his ‘One Bite’ reviews amassing millions of views and often changing the lives of restaurateurs (only one place has ever gotten a perfect 10).
He isn’t known for his takes on film and television, even though Barstool has a dedicated movie brand and podcast: Lights, Camera, Barstool, hosted by Jeff D. Lowe and Jack Kennedy. Other members of the Barstool team have stoked the fires of ‘Film Twitter’; in July, Robbie Fox complained about James Cameron “sacrificing” his career for the Avatar franchise.
Now, Portnoy has riled up moviegoers by targeting one of the year’s most acclaimed titles, even claiming that someone would lose their credibility if they like it.
Dave Portnoy says Sinners is overrated
According to Portnoy, Sinners isn’t all that it’s been cracked up to be. He watched it when he discovered that Weapons wasn’t available to stream yet – even though it was only released in cinemas on August 8 – and wasn’t impressed by what he saw.
“I’ve heard all the hype about Weapons. Planned my entire weekend around watching it. I didn’t realize it wasn’t available to stream yet,” he wrote on X/Twitter.
“So I went with Sinners instead. I may be like six months late with this critique but that was one of the most overhyped overrated movies of all time. If you say that movie was great you have no movie credibility with me.”
The post has already been viewed over 4.5 million times and garnered thousands of replies. A few Barstool colleagues are among them, as well as people agreeing with his criticism, but several posts have honed in on a specific detail in his tweet: his mix-up with Weapons.
“How did you ‘plan your entire weekend’ around watching a movie that you thought was accessible on your television at any moment?” one user asked, while another joked: “The concept of planning your weekend around a movie you don’t even know how to watch.”
“Immediately discredited yourself with the ‘wasn’t available to stream yet’ discourse. Disgraceful take,” a third wrote.
Either way, Sinners remains one of the best-reviewed films of the year. It has a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes, plus a 96% verified audience rating, and it’s already been tipped for Oscar nominations at the 2026 ceremony.
