The Clayface horror movie is one of the most exciting projects in the DCU, but fans are shutting down the theory that he’ll be the villain in Andy Muschietti’s Batman: The Brave and the Bold movie.

The solo film will take place in the DCU and will follow Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys-Harries) a young actor who undergoes an experimental treatment after a gangster attacks him and disfigures his face. It’s inspired by the origin of the Basil Karlo Clayface in Batman: The Animated series, with a story from The Haunting of Hill House creator, Mike Flanagan.

Muschietti referenced Clayface in It: Welcome to Derry Episode 1 when a character is seen reading Matt Hagen’s first appearance in Detective Comics #298. James Gunn then shared the same comic on Instagram to celebrate Clayface’s anniversary, and now Harries has done the same to announce the last week of shooting on the movie.

This led some to speculate that Clayface will be the main villain in Muschietti’s film. However, the discussion has now flipped the other way and DCU fans have shut down the idea for a very specific reason.

DCU fans aren’t convinced by Clayface Batman villain theory

A number of DCU fans have pointed out that the comic appeared on the show and social media to celebrate Hagen’s first appearance in the comics ahead of the Clayface movie, rather than specifically hinting at Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

The conversation came up when one Redditor said, “This Clayface issue has been getting a lot of attention this week with Gunn posting it on the anniversary of Clayface’s first appearance, Andy adding this Easter egg in Welcome to Derry, and now this.”

Another commented, “The amount of times this cover has been showcased recently is leading me to believe he’s the villain of Brave and the Bold.”

However, as one fan pointed out, “The reason it’s been used multiple times is because it’s the only comic that has Matt Hagen as the main Clayface.”

Another warned not to expect a Batman cameo in the Clayface movie, adding: “People really are going to react to this worse than they did with Peacemaker Season 2 once no Batman or Robin is seen. Everyone should go into this expecting a relatively self contained story.”

One commenter pointed out that it is strange how Clayface will be a DCU movie and not a self-contained Elseworlds project like The Batman or even Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker.

They wrote: “There is a reason its set in the DCU and isn’t an Elseworlds movie. It very well could be just a niche origin story movie they really wanted to make, but I doubt it. Even if there is no Batman reference, I’d be shocked if it didn’t do a lot to establish Gotham lore for the DCU.”
