Despite being invite-only and becoming playable back in August 2024, Deadlocks playercount has peaked at just under 100k players, all thanks to a new character.

Usually, when a game releases, it hits its peak in the first few days and then peters off into a more consistent number. This was no different for Deadlock, which had a more unique release in that its developers, Valve, never actually announced it, allowing fans to uncover the game and invite their friends. When it was first dropped, over 170,000 players jumped into the PvP shooter, making it a huge yet subtle hit.

Since then, it evened out at around 20,000 players at any one time, occasionally spiking to around 67,000 players during its Old Gods, New Blood update on January 23. However, thanks to one adorable new character, that playercount has skyrocketed despite the game still being incredibly hard to get access to.

Deadlock playercount reaches nearly 100k after new character

As part of the Old Gods, New Blood update, a new hero is set to drop each week for the next three weeks. The first is Rem, a cute hero built around the community’s demands for support abilities.

First of all, he’s absolutely adorable, and second, he’s incredibly powerful, making him a key aspect for any fan of Deadlock.

And there are many of those fans, as the games playercount skyrocketed from around 24,000 to an impressive 98,887 in just 12 hours on January 26, according to Steamdb.

This is made all the more impressive when you consider it’s invite-only, meaning you can only play the game if your friend invites you, and that Highguard also released around the same time on January 26, hitting a peak playercount of 97,249, a similar number to Deadlock.

So, despite competing with another large PvP adventure and being pretty hard to gain access to, it seems Deadlock is holding strong with a hefty fanbase.
