The music video for Grimes’ new song, ‘Artificial Angels,’ has fans convinced that Elon Musk modeled his AI chatbot, Ani, on his former girlfriend.
Back in June, Elon Musk unveiled his new AI chatbot, a virtual avatar named Ani. Fans immediately drew comparisons to other women, both real and fictional, believing she was designed with Grimes or Death Note’s Misa Amane in mind.
Grimes, also known as Claire Elise Boucher, was in a relationship with Musk for a few years and had three children with him. However, their relationship was a bitter one, ending with a custody dispute.
On October 20, Grimes released the music video for her song ‘Artificial Angels,’ and fans believe it contains clues indicating that Ani was indeed based on the Canadian artist.

The music video, which also includes references to video games and streaming culture, features constant use of Ani throughout, including scenes with Grimes dancing with the AI chatbot.
Towards the end of the video, there’s also a scene where Grimes transforms into Ani.
Only adding to the intrigue, Elon Musk had unfollowed Grimes on X the day before the music video was released.
“Is this why Elon unfollowed Grimes (again)? She lowkey confirmed what we were all thinking: Ani was modeled after her,” one fan commented.
“I KNEW IT! I knew Ani was based on Grimes. Ha!” another chimed in. “Thank you Elon Musk…. you’re eating out of the palm of her hand and she is making spectacular art out of your gooning. A masterclass.”
“Wow, Grimes reveals Elon’s ANI is HER… well sort of!” exclaimed someone else. “Grimes seemed to love Elon very much. She was also surrounded by his security. Putting a TEST out. Deep video and song.”
Of course, as with all music, her lyrics and videos can be interpreted many different ways, and we may not get a concrete answer from the artist about what the constant Ani references mean.
That said, Ani’s initial comparisons to Misa Amane from Death Note may hold some weight, too. Grimes has proven to be a major fan of the manga after her 2002 song ‘Shinigami Eyes.’
Artificial Angels isn’t the only Grimes project to make headlines, either. The 37-year-old also sparked controversy following the reveal of her new album cover, which featured references to political activist and content creator Charlie Kirk, including a memorial meme coin.
