Disney has confirmed that The Simpsons Movie 2 is officially in the works, with the long-awaited sequel set to hit theaters on July 23, 2027, taking the place of a previously-scheduled Marvel release.
20 years after the first Simpsons Movie, Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie are heading back to the big screen. The announcement was made by 20th Century Studios on Instagram, where the studio shared an image of Homer’s hand reaching for donut with sprinkles shaped like the number 2.
“Woohoo! The Simpsons are coming to theaters with an all-new movie on July 23, 2027!” the post read.
The Simpsons Movie 2 takes new Marvel film’s spot
The date had been reserved for an untitled Marvel Cinematic Universe film, which has now been removed from Disney’s slate. That leaves a full year-long gap between Marvel’s next two Avengers installments, Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.
The sequel will also face direct competition at the box office. Warner Bros. is scheduled to release its animated musical Bad Fairies on the very same July 23, 2027 date.
Released in 2007, the first Simpsons Movie was a massive success, grossing $536 million worldwide. Its plot centered on the Environmental Protection Agency trapping Springfield under a dome after Homer pollutes the town’s water supply.
While Disney has yet to reveal the storyline for The Simpsons Movie 2, the announcement marks a major moment for the franchise, which has remained culturally relevant through decades of TV seasons and its recent streaming success.
