Disney Plus has left subscribers baffled after they began receiving emails literally doubling down on the price increase for a yearly subscription from $79.99 to $159.99.
Back in September, the company announced that its ad-supported Disney Plus plan will jump by $2 to $11.99 per month, while the monthly Premium no-ads tier will climb $3 to $18.99 monthly.
While those price changes have already gone into effect, the biggest jump comes for yearly subscribers. While some users’ plans will be going up by $30, others, who were locked in at special deals, will be paying $80 more.
Such is the case for Barstool Sports’ Dante Deiana, who went viral after posting a screenshot showing his $80 subscription would be doubled to $160 on November 19.
Dante was quick to pull the plug on his subscription, stating that he only had Disney Plus for one show to begin with.
“Just cancelled. I only had it for Mandalorian,” he said.
Others were urged to unsubscribe or voiced their support for piracy. One posted a photo of their cancellation. “It’s easier than you think. Just do it,” they said.
Users in more corners of the internet followed suit with many Redditors claiming they, too had ditched Disney Plus.
“I have finally canceled Disney because of this. I paid yearly the second it was available to me, when I got the notice of this price increase, I told my kids I need to know the content that you guys really love so that I can put it on your laptops, cuz I’m killing Disney.”
Meanwhile, Disney has been locked in a battle with YouTube TV as they’ve been unable to agree on a new deal over several channels, including ESPN and ABC.
This backlash comes just two months after Disney faced a wave of cancellations over the company’s decision to briefly suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live! after the host made controversial comments about the killing of political activist Charlie Kirk and his supporters.
Some say they’ve yet to resubscribe to Disney Plus after the Kimmel snafu and this price hike will keep them from doing so.
