DoorDash claims to have banned an account responsible for using AI to fake a food delivery, forging an image of a completed order moments after it was placed.
X (formerly Twitter) user Byrne Hobart wanted a meal delivered on December 27, 2025, so they turned to DoorDash. “Immediately” after placing their order, it was marked as having been delivered.
Suspicious, they checked the app to find a picture closely resembling their front door, with a bag of food left out the front. However, this image wasn’t real, but rather, generated by Artificial Intelligence.
In the real world, only seconds had passed, and no food was at their door. While the now-viral post has drawn a number of detractors questioning its legitimacy, DoorDash has since commented on the matter, claiming to have banned the associated account, thereby confirming it indeed happened.
DoorDash bans ‘driver’ for using AI to fake a delivery
Speculating on how it may have happened, Hobart suggested a jailbroken phone may have been used. In the process, the ‘driver’ could have gained access to a DoorDash feature that shows images of earlier deliveries to the same address.
Using one of those pictures as a reference point, they could have then asked an AI program to generate an image of a completed order at the address. Of course, this is purely speculation for now though, so do take it with a complimentary sachet of salt.
One other X user, Dave, claimed to have experienced the same thing, also in Austin, Texas on the very same day. They also shared two images of their house, one real, one AI-generated with a food order out the front.
In speaking with TechCrunch after the matter went viral, a DoorDash spokesperson confirmed the events and assured the account had been removed.
“After quickly investigating this incident, our team permanently removed the Dasher’s account. We have zero tolerance for fraud and use a combination of technology and human review to detect and prevent bad actors from abusing our platform.”
