An 8-kilometer race in northern Brazil took an unexpected turn after a drunk man joined the event mid-run in flip-flops and still managed to win a medal.

The incident happened on July 27 in the town of Garrafao do Norte, Para. As reported by Brazilian outlet Mais Goias, the man, identified as Isaque Pinho, had been drinking at a local bar before spontaneously deciding to enter the race.

Despite being armed with a pair of flip flops, Isaque kept pace with the other runners and completed the full route. Spectators reportedly cheered him on during the final stretch, and footage of his run quickly went viral on social media.

In an interview with local news, Isaque said the moment has changed his outlook on life. “I was having a couple of drinks there, and it got light, and I went for a walk around the square. I saw a crowd and decided to run to see if the hangover would go away,” he explained.

Isaque revealed that he’s struggled with alcohol since his teenage years, but now sees running as a way to start over.

“My dream is to get out of the life of cachaca (white rum), the addiction, get a job, and have family and friends to support me,” he said. “From now on, I want to be better. Running has helped me – it’s a gift from God.”

Although he wasn’t officially signed up, race staff awarded him a participant’s medal at the finish line. The moment has since been widely shared across Brazilian platforms, with many calling it both absurd and oddly inspiring.
