A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and Prince Aegon Targaryen, and it’s all leading towards one tragic event that takes place 50 years after Season 1.
We know from the books roughly what happened, but there’s still a lot of mystery surrounding it, and it looks like Egg’s actor, Dexter Sol Ansell, just revealed a major twist that not even book readers see coming. Spoilers to follow…
In an interview with Decider, Sol Ansell and Peter Claffey (Dunk) were asked how much they knew about their characters’ futures, and whether they had heard of ‘Summerhall.’ This was the tragic event in which the Targaryen royal residence burnt down, killing Egg, Ser Duncan, Egg’s son, and many more. Episode 3’s prophecy directly refers to this.
It’s widely believed that Egg was using wildfire to try to wake dormant dragon eggs, and it went horribly wrong. However, Sol Ansell just revealed there’s more to the story.
Egg actor reveals Dunk’s fate after Summerhall
“I don’t know about Peter, but I do know a bit about when Egg’s trying to make dragons in Summerhall, and then there’s a huge fire,” said Sol Ansell. “But we know from George [R.R. Martin] … we know Dunk survives, but we don’t know if Egg survives yet.”
Claffey visibly cringes and mimes ‘cut,’ before saying, “We don’t know exactly what’s happened, but let’s just get this Season 1 out of the way, and we’ll see.”
This is a major deviation from everything we know from the books, but it’s far from impossible that Dunk would have survived. The history of Westeros is written second-hand by in-universe characters, so if Dunk did survive and escape, the Maesters probably wouldn’t have known about it.
It also begs the question of what Dunk gets up to after Summerhall. Perhaps he joins the Night’s Watch under a guise, leaves Westeros, or maybe it has something to do with his connection to Brienne of Tarth. We know from George R.R. Martin that Dunk is Brienne’s ancestor, but we just don’t know how exactly, so perhaps he hides out in Tarth after Summerhall and leaves his shield.
It also opens up the possibility that Egg survived, but we should get our answers in either a future season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, later novellas, or The Winds of Winter – whichever arrives first.
