Elizabeth Olsen has revealed her take on Marvel backlash from critics while talking about her future as Scarlet Witch.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had its ups and downs in recent years that has led to some superhero fatigue. Its output increased dramatically following 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, with Marvel Studios releasing numerous movies and Disney+ TV shows that have bulked up the Multiverse Saga ahead of Avengers: Doomsday in 2026 and its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, in 2027.

But with so many MCU projects to keep up with, some critics have lamented that Marvel has brought on superhero fatigue. 2025 has been a mixed bag for the studio. Captain America: Brave New World scraped in $415 million, and our review described it as “a profoundly mid, muddled actioner that’s just entertaining enough.” Meanwhile Thunderbolts earned $382 million , and The Fantastic Four: First Steps made $515 million.

Despite the varying degrees of success, the Scarlet Witch herself responded to the idea that the MCU is running out of steam.

Elizabeth Olsen says Marvel fans are the focus, not critics

People reported that Olsen expressed an interest in exploring other Scarlet Witch stories from the comics during a panel at the Hampton International Film Festival on October 4, before briefly touching on the criticism faced by Marvel.

“It is something that I love, and it’s something I always want to return to. I think the thing that’s been so special about the last five years is I’ve gotten to do so much with the character that I never thought I would,” she says. “There are still character through lines that have happened in the comics that I’d love to do that I think fans also want to.

“I mean, these movies aren’t for critics, these movies are for fans.”

She continued by comparing the way actors work on the MCU to those who appear in long-running television shows.

“Some people have ongoing television series that they get to return to. Very few, I feel like, get to be a part of franchises that, I know we might culturally get a little bit exhausted by, but there is something about them that becomes very familial.”

Unfortunately, Olsen previously debunked theories that she’ll be in Avengers: Doomsday, which arrives in cinemas on December 18, 2026.
