xAI has launched Grokipedia, a new encyclopedia tied to its Grok AI, which features a basic search-focused design similar to Wikipedia.

Grokipedia shows page structures that resemble Wikipedia entries, including headings and citations. Some pages include a Grok “fact check” timestamp, though users can’t clearly suggest or submit edits of their own.

The Verge reports that many articles appear to have been directly pulled from Wikipedia. Some are almost identical to existing entries.

Pages show identical wording to Wikipedia

On pages like the MacBook Air, PlayStation 5, and Lincoln Mark VIII, Grokipedia displays a notice reading: “The content is adapted from Wikipedia, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 4.0 License.” The wording on those pages matches Wikipedia line for line.

The Wikimedia Foundation acknowledged the situation. “Even Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist,” spokesperson Lauren Dickinson told The Verge in a statement.

This follows a previous instance in which Grok cited Wikipedia results. In September, Elon Musk responded to a user pointing this out, saying xAI planned to fix the issue by the end of the year.

Not every page mirrors Wikipedia directly. For example, both sites host climate change entries, but Grokipedia’s language emphasizes criticism of the scientific consensus and suggests media groups contribute to “heightened public alarm.”

Wikipedia states there is near-unanimous agreement among scientific organizations that the climate is warming due to human activity. A counter on Grokipedia’s homepage lists more than 885,000 articles, compared to around 7 million English pages currently available on Wikipedia.
