Beast of Reincarnation is a new action RPG in development at Game Freak, the studio best known for its long-running stewardship of the mainline Pokemon games.
Revealed during Microsoft’s 2025 Xbox Game Showcase, Beast of Reincarnation isn’t the first major non-Pokemon IP Game Freak has worked on, but it’s certainly shaping up to be their most ambitious yet.
Set in a post-apocalyptic Japan, you’ll play as Emma in the single-player adventure, accompanied on your journey to save humanity by Koo, Emma’s loyal canine companion.
Beast of Reincarnation is scheduled for release in 2026. Beyond that, no specifics are known, including whether the RPG will release simultaneously on all available platforms.
What we do know, however, is that the RPG will be available on Xbox Game Pass.
Platforms
Beast of Reincarnation will be available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC (via Steam).
Surprisingly, considering Game Freak’s long-running relationship with Nintendo, no Switch 2 version has been announced, although this doesn’t necessarily rule one out indefinitely.
Trailers
Just one trailer, released on June 8 at Microsoft’s 2025 Xbox Game Showcase, has been released so far. This features a mixture of cinematic exposition and gameplay.
Gameplay & Story details
Beast of Reincarnation takes place in Japan in the aftermath of a post-apocalyptic event. During the trailer, an unknown individual speaking to who is presumably an infant Emma, states, “In the year 4026, humanity awaits its inevitable extinction.”
Emma is described as humanity’s last hope and an “outcast” cursed as a “Blighted One.” Game Freak hasn’t elaborated on either of these story beats thus far, only that Emma, accompanied by her animal companion Koo, will set out on a journey across an “ominous, ever-changing world” built around “demanding, technical combat.”
Glimpses of these technical combat mechanics are present in the reveal trailer. Combos, parrying, and environmental traversal, allowing Emma to get the drop on her opponents from above, all feature heavily.
In terms of variety, Emma will learn “strange powers” as her journey progresses, one of which is likely the vine-like device wrapped around her arm, allowing her to grapple enemies from afar. So far, the only weapon we’ve seen Emma wield is a katana, so it remains to be seen if different weapons will be available.
