An Aegon’s Conquest TV show is in development, set to chronicle one of the most – if not the most – important stories in the history of Game of Thrones.

If you asked someone three years ago if they were interested in another Game of Thrones series, they’d probably laugh or scoff in your face. The original series ended in such unanimously hated fashion that it almost erased its pop-cultural footprint.

Despite its backlashes and criticism (including from George R.R. Martin), House of the Dragon has turned the tide. The Emmy-winning prequel has given fans a reason to believe in the franchise again, and its revival has only just begun.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is coming next year, shows centered on the Sea Snake and Queen Nymaria are in development, and another pivotal project is in the works: Aegon’s Conquest.

HBO’s Aegon’s Conquest series doesn’t have a release date. Considering the scripts aren’t complete and House of the Dragon Season 3 isn’t expected to be released until 2026, don’t expect to see it until 2027 at the absolute earliest, if not 2028.

The project had been rumored since he release of House of the Dragon, but it was confirmed to be in development in early 2024, with The Batman co-writer Mattson Tomlin penning the scripts.

Tomlin told his X/Twitter followers that he’s done “lots” of work on the series, and that George R.R. Martin is involved in the project.

In an earlier statement, he said: “I really take what he says as, ‘God is speaking to me.’ I really do. Because at the end of the day, any question that I could have, anything I don’t understand, there’s a guy who has the answer.

“I figured out a way to make it personal. And a lot of what won me the job was relating it to real life. And talking about the Romanian Revolution and talking about my mother and talking about sometimes a conquest can happen and it can be very good for the people that are being quote unquote ‘conquered,’ but also it can split apart families.

“And I had things to say beyond, ‘the dragons come.’ And that’s not an easy thing to do, because you’re also trying to do a faithful adaptation in which the dragons come. And so having something to say that was really personal, I think that that’s why he in part chose me.

“And so was I nervous to get the job? Of course, because for me, it’s kind of like you want these jobs, but then if you get them, then there’s this moment of going, ‘Now I actually have to do this.'”

To be clear, Aegon’s Conquest has yet to be greenlit for production, but it’s highly unlikely it’ll be axed (unlike Bloodmoon).

What is Aegon’s Conquest about?

Aegon’s Conquest is expected to follow Aegon I Targaryen in his mission to become the first king to ever sit on the Iron Throne and take the title of Lord of the Seven Kingdoms.

It’s arguably the most important event in George R.R. Martin’s saga of ice and fire: the formation of the Seven Kingdoms under one Targaryen king, Aegon I, after forcing the realms to bend the knee.

He’s been mentioned in House of the Dragon; specifically, we’ve seen the skull of his dragon, Balerion, the fiercest and largest of its kind in the history of Westeros. Also, the fact that Viserys’ son has the same name caused the confusion that led to the Dance of the Dragons.

After House of the Dragon revealed the true reasoning behind his conquest (he saw a vision of the White Walkers and believed a Targaryen needed to sit on the Iron Throne for the world to survive), it appears the series will follow its example and “interpret” the source material.

Speaking to Tomlin, Westerosies (via Nexus Point News) asked about his approach to the story.

“It starts with what George has done. I’ve now gotten to spend quite a bit of time with him, and there have been a lot of pinch-me moments of just kind of going through fire and blood, highlighting passages, and asking him, ‘What did this mean? What is this? What I think it is,’” he explained.

“You know, sometimes really grilling him, going, ‘I don’t understand what’s happening here.’ And then other times going, ‘I think that it could mean this.’ But it’s really taking that text and treating it like it’s real history. That’s one of the things that my approach to it was, [that] Fire and Blood is written like a real history and these things happened.

“We know the history of Alexander the Great; we know the history of Napoleon. We know what the battles were. We know a lot of the people who died. We know in some cases what was said or what might have been said, but we don’t know everything. We don’t know all of it. We kind of have these flag poles that tell us this is how we marched through history.

“But then also there’s that great quote that somebody much smarter than I said: history is written by the people who won. And so then there’s that as well.”

Who will be cast in Aegon’s Conquest?

There haven’t been any casting announcements for Aegon’s Conquest yet, because it’s nowhere near starting production.

However, one of the most common fan-casts to play the titular Targaryen is Henry Cavill.

“We the fans of the Game of Thrones universe watching how Henry Cavill will no longer play Geralt of Rivia so that one day he will be our Aegon the Conqueror,” one fan wrote.

“The only excuse I can accept for Henry Cavill leaving Witcher is if he comes as Aegon Targyreon in House of Dragon, no less,” another earlier posted.

Other roles will need to be filled, such as Visenya and Rhaenys Targaryen (his wives, both of whom are also his sisters) and his two children, Aenys and Maegor.
