Netflix has released the first trailer for Troll 2, a sequel to the streamer’s most-watched non-English feature, and a film that shares its name with the best worst movie ever.

The first Troll movie concerned an explosion in the Norwegian mountains waking up a gigantic troll, which then wreaks havoc. The film hit Netflix in December of 2022, and soon became the streamer’s most watched movie not in the English language.

A sequel was therefore inevitable, but what’s surprising is that the movie is going by the name Troll 2, when that’s also the title of a 1990 horror sequel that was much maligned at the time, and has since become the subject of documentary Best Worst Movie.

But rather than give the new effort some kind of subtitle to set it apart, Netflix has kept it simple, so here’s everything we know about the forthcoming Troll 2, as well as details of the hilarious celluloid disaster with which it shares a name.

Troll 2 will hit Netflix on December 1, 2025, which mirrors the release of its predecessor.

The film reunites director Roar Uthaug with writer Espen Aukan, and producers Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud.

Speaking of expectations surrounding the release, producers Horn and Sinkerud say: “It’s always daunting to do a sequel but we truly feel that this time, we’ve created an even better, bigger, funnier, and more adventurous film.”

Who is in Troll 2?

Here’s the main cast of Troll 2, including actors and the characters they play:

  • Ine Marie Wilmann is Nora
  • Kim Falck is Andres
  • Mads Sjøgård Pettersen is Captain Kris
  • Sara Khorami is Marion

Wilmann says of the sequel: “Diving into the Troll adventure was incredibly fun the first time around, and we were absolutely amazed by its global success. It is with great respect and excitement that I embarked on creating the sequel.

“I hope and believe that people will enjoy more of what they appreciated last time. We certainly had a fantastic time making Troll 2, and we are really looking forward to sharing it with the world.”

Troll 2 trailer

The first teaser trailer for Troll 2 dropped on June 30, 2025, and can be viewed below:

Here’s what director Roar Uthaug has to say about the sequel: “I am beyond proud of how audiences around the globe connected with the first Troll film far beyond what we imagined.

“With the sequel, we are aiming high – expanding the scope, deepening the story, and creating a troll-sized spectacle like you’ve never seen before. I cannot wait for fans to experience the adventure we have in store.”

What is Troll 2 about?

Troll 2 features a new troll being awakened and causing chaos all over Norway, meaning the original film’s heroes have to reassemble to bring it down.

Here’s the official synopsis: When a dangerous new troll is awakened, unleashing devastation across Norway, beloved adventurers Nora, Andreas and Captain Kris are thrust into their most perilous mission yet.

“To stop the creature’s ruthless rampage, they must enlist new allies and delve into the country’s ancient history, searching for answers. As the clock ticks and the troll’s path of destruction grows wider, our heroes face impossible odds in their fight to save their homeland from falling into darkness.”

The original Troll 2 explained

The first Troll movie was a Gremlins rip-off that hit screens in 1986, featuring a bizarre cast that included Michael Moriarty, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sonny Bono, and NeverEnding Story star Noah Hathaway.

It isn’t remembered for much aside from featuring a young protagonist called Harry Potter, but the movie made enough money to spawn a sequel. One which is remembered for all the wrong reasons.

That’s because Troll 2 doesn’t feature any actual trolls, as it was initially conceived as a film called Goblins, and crafted as a standalone horror movie about how annoying vegetarians are.

The film was shot in Utah, but made by an Italian director and crew who spoke little English. That language barrier meant strange dialogue, weird line deliveries, and a plot that got lost in translation and makes little sense.

Troll 2 was also shot on a shoestring budget, so the effects shift from terrible to laughable, which is bad news for a monster movie.

The American distributors weren’t sure what to do with the result, so rthey eleased and marketed it as a Troll sequel, even though it had no discernible connection to the original.

Troll 2 quickly disappeared without a trace, but horror fans eventually embraced the madness of the movie, and a cult built around it, fueled by midnight and festival screenings all over America.

Michael Paul Stephenson – who was the young star of Troll 2 – captured the film’s growing popularity in the brilliant documentary Best Worst Movie, which told bonkers behind-the-scenes stories, and cemented Troll 2’s position as the worst movie ever.
