There’s a new Resident Evil movie in the works, courtesy of Barbarian and Weapons director Zach Cregger – here’s everything we know about the video game adaptation, including plot, cast, and release date.

Launched by Capcom in 1996, Resident Evil is one of the most popular and successful titles in video game history.

Pitting players against hostile zombies and monsters, the title was turned into a successful film series starring Milla Jovovich, and as the game nears its 40th anniversary, Resident Evil is getting a celluloid reboot.

We don’t know the movie’s title yet, but writer-director Zach Cregger has been discussing his plans while doing publicity rounds for new movie Weapons, so this is everything we know about the next iteration of Resident Evil.

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil will be released on September 18, 2026.

The movie was announced in January of 2025, while following a huge bidding war, Sony secured the rights to the movie in March.

In June 2025, the film was registered with the Czech Audiovisual Fund, suggesting that the bulk of the new Resident Evil will shoot the the Czech Republic.

Resident Evil plot: What’s it about?

The new movie is rumored to revolve around an organ courier who stumbles into full-blown horror while working a night shift in Raccoon City.

Here’s the leaked synopsis, as per Daniel RPK: “Bryan, a laid-back organ courier, is sent on a late-night delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital. En route through a snowy mountain road, he accidentally hits a strange woman with his car.

“She survives – but something is very wrong. As he tries to help, Bryan stumbles into a full-blown outbreak involving horrifying tentacle-based mutations and bio-engineered monstrosities.”

Resident Evil cast: Who is in it?

Austin Abrams is the lead in Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil, and if the above synopsis is true, he’s playing the Bryan character.

Abrams got his big break in horror, playing Ron Anderson in Seasons 5 and 6 of The Walking Dead. High-profile roles in This is Us and Euphoria followed.

Abrams has also appeared in big-screen horror via Tragedy Girls, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and most recently Weapons, which was written and directed by… Zach Cregger.

How the movie will stay true to the game

While Cregger is telling a wholly fresh and original Resident Evil story, he’s also promised fans that the movie will stay true to the lore of the source material, factoring in both the Umbrella Corporation, and the RCPD.

“Let me say this: this is not breaking the rules of the games,” Cregger told Inverse. “I am the biggest worshiper of the games, so I’m telling a story that is a love letter to the games and follows the rules of the games.”

“It is obedient to the lore of the games, it’s just a different story. I’m not going to tell Leon’s story, because Leon’s story is told in the games. [Fans] already have that.”
