A former Rockstar Games technical lead has warned that Grand Theft Auto 6 could be locked at 30 frames per second on current-gen consoles and claims it might be the right call.
Obbe Vermeij, who worked on classic GTA titles during the PS2 and PS3 era, explained that Rockstar could be prioritizing visual fidelity over framerate in its upcoming blockbuster.
“At 30 FPS, you can render twice as many polygons compared to 60 FPS,” Vermeij said. “For a competitive action game you’d always go for the high frame rate, but for GTA 6 you might prefer the visual details.”
Vermeij also noted the unique strain GTA 6 will place on both the CPU and GPU. “With all the AI and physics for all the cars and characters in the street, the game will likely be limited by both CPU and GPU. Most games are limited by GPU only,” he said. “So for GTA 6 it will not be as simple as reducing the resolution a bit (or running on a PS5 Pro) to hit 60Hz.”
GTA 6 devs seek “perfection” regardless of framerate
These new comments by Vermeij add weight to speculation that GTA 6 will only hit 60 FPS on PS5 Pro, though even that’s in doubt. Digital Foundry’s Richard Leadbetter cast skepticism on whether the Pro would be able to push GTA 6 to 60 FPS, even with the hardware bump.
That said, rumors have also suggested that GTA VI will launch with an exclusive PS5 Pro console bundle as part of Sony’s marketing agreement with Rockstar.
Another report claimed that GTA 6 will be getting a “mind-blowing” PS5 Pro enhancement in the form of a PSSR 2.0 firmware upgrade.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, meanwhile, has insisted that Rockstar is chasing “perfection” with the new title and is “determined to set creative benchmarks for the series, industry, and entertainment.”
GTA 6 is set to launch May 26, 2026. Whether it runs at 30 FPS or 60, expectations couldn’t be higher, and Rockstar knows every frame counts.
