Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender is right around the corner, and to celebrate, we’ve got an exclusive preview for one of two newly revealed Scene Boxes.
Magic: The Gathering has had a stacked 2025, and the TCG is about to round that out with its second-last release of the year. With the insane success of the recent Final Fantasy crossover, Wizards of the Coast is looking to dip into the Universes Beyond well once more.
Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender will see characters and moments from the beloved Nickelodeon franchise hit the tabletop. The animated series’ rich setting and unique brand of mysticism make a collab with MTG a no-brainer.
For players particularly invested in the Avatar universe, Wizards of the Coast has cooked up an exciting collector’s product. The Black Sun Invasion Scene Box is one of two visual love letters that Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender offers to diehard fans, and Dexerto is able to exclusively reveal one of them here.
What are the MTG x ATLA Scene Boxes?
The Black Sun Invasion Scene Box is one of two collector sets unique to the Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender. The Scene Box immortalizes one of the show’s most iconic setpieces; the titular Day of Black Sun Invasion.
This famous battle marked Aang and the gang’s first attempt to take down the tyrannical Fire Lord Ozai while his powers were temporarily hindered by a solar eclipse. Gathering the numerous allies they had befriended on their journey, the heroes struck deep into Fire Nation territory to assault the capital.
While the box includes a bunch of goodies to expand your Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender collection, the standouts are six foil scene cards that can be placed in order to depict artist Fahmi Fauzi’s take on the Black Sun Invasion.
MTG x ATLA – The Black Sun Invasion Scene Box contents
While the Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender set isn’t getting any preconstructed Commander decks, the Black Sun Invasion Scene Box gives you a head start at building one from scratch. The box includes:
- 3 Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender Play Boosters
- 6 traditional foil scene cards
- 6 art-only scene cards
- 1 display easel
The art-only scene cards mean you can keep the dynamic scene displayed on the easel while you use the traditional foils for play.
The cards themselves will make a handy addition to any Avatar-themed deck, but if you’re fortunate enough to pull the elusive ‘Avatar Aang’ in those booster packs, you’ll be able to use all of them in the same one. Check out our previews for all 6 scene cards below.
Appa, The Vigilant
This armored up Appa variant is a fittingly big body on the board at 6/6. His seven mana cost might see him come to the board a little late, but in a drawn-out game of Commander, his ability is well worth the wait.
Appa, The Vigilant gives each of your creatures a major single-turn boost upon entry. +1/+1 and flying are useful enough, but his titular vigilance means your creatures won’t have to be tapped to attack.
This ability can recur whenever an Ally creature is put into play, and from what we’ve seen so far, the Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender set is jam-packed with the Ally tag. It should be easy enough to trigger Appa, The Vigilant continuously and always have some blockers spare.
Katara’s Reversal
Played at the right moment, Katara’s Reversal is an Instant that can swing things in your favor both offensively and defensively. Don’t like the stack of effects that your opponent is building up? Counter them. Like the turn you’ve cooked up yourself? Untap up to four of your own creatures or artifacts to double up on some triggers.
It’s a lot of utility for a four-cost card and true to the apparent ethos for Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender, it should combo well with a variety of colors.
Fire Nation Turret
Fire Nation Turret is an interesting artifact that can give any creature in your arsenal +2 Power and the ‘Firebending 2’ ability at the start of combat. Creatures with the ability generate two red mana whenever they attack, which can be useful for casting Instants, particularly if you have a few Firebenders on the board.
Of course, with Fire Nation Turret in play, you might want to spend some of that mana to load it up with Charge tokens. If you can protect it long enough to generate 50 Charge tokens, you can take most opponents out with a single hit. Even players with a lot of pesky life gain.
Swampbenders
Swampbenders can be a big body thanks to their power and toughness being equal to the amount of Swamps you have in play. Fortunately, they also turn all of your Lands into Swamps.
Being a six-cost creature, that means playing Swampbenders on curve makes them a beefy 6/6 right out of the gate. If you can keep playing Lands, they’ll only get better.
Sokka’s Charge
Next up, Sokka’s Charge is a pretty run-of-the-mill Enchantment that gives your creatures with the Ally tag double strike and lifelink. The sheer volume of Ally creatures in the Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender set means that most cards in the set will benefit from it being in play.
The combination of double strike and lifelink should be a useful tool for keeping you in the game with every bit of damage dealt, healing you for the same amount. Times it by two and you get the idea.
Earthshape
Earthshape is an Instant that can be used to protect yourself from Instants and Sorceries your opponents might cast with hexproof. It also offers some offensive output thanks to the inclusion of the new Earthbending Mechanic.
‘Earthbend 3’ allows you to transform one of your Land cards into a 3/3 creature with haste, meaning it can be used to swing at opponents immediately. If that wasn’t enough, Earthshape also gives every creature you control with three or fewer power hexproof as well.
That rounds out our preview for The Black Sun Invasion Scene Box. Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender goes on sale November 21, 2025 and products are already available for preorder.
