Exclusive: TikTok sources debunk rumors of AI age verification coming to US

Sources close to TikTok told Dexerto that an AI age verification system is not rolling out to users in the United States after a prominent Roblox streamer claimed he was unfairly targeted by the platform.

In August 2025, Roblox streamer KreekCraft went viral after sharing screenshots of a notification he’d received on the app telling him that his account would be deleted, saying “it looks like you do not meet the age requirement to use TikTok.”

The streamer lashed out at the platform, saying “their AI thought I was under 13 years old” and clarifying that he was 28.

Sources deny TikTok uses AI for age verification

KreekCraft’s sentiments have now confirmed to be mistaken, as sources close to TikTok told Dexerto that their age verification procedure is not powered by AI.

Instead, they explained that TikTok uses a mixture of moderation tools to determine users’ ages — and sometimes, they get that wrong.

For instance, their tools might flag a comment from a user saying that they go to a certain middle school, which gets picked up by the app’s moderation team as evidence that the user isn’t old enough to be on the app.

Our sources firmly denied claims that TikTok uses AI in this system, saying it was likely a fluke of the many tools they use to check users’ ages.

This news comes after TikTok rolled out their age verification system earlier this month, which coincided with the near-ban on KreekCraft’s account.

Social media AI age verification sparks concern online

It isn’t too surprising that KreekCraft accused AI of being behind the incident, though. A few other social platforms have announced plans to bring AI-based age verification to their own users, such as YouTube, which will implement the system on August 13.

YouTube’s age verification model will utilize AI and a range of other tools, including activity and even viewing history, to guess a user’s age.

If YouTube determines that you’re under 18, it will implement restrictions on what content you can view, as well as limit personalized ads to reduce exposure to “problematic” videos.
