Facebook is testing a new subscription that charges users for sharing more than a small number of links, with some accounts shown a £9.99 monthly price to lift the limit.
Notifications sent to a select group of users in the UK and US say they will be restricted to just two link posts per month unless they pay. The test appears to focus on accounts using professional mode or Pages, used by creators and businesses to promote their content.
Meta confirmed the experiment, saying it is a limited test designed to assess whether increased link posting provides extra value for subscribers.
Links have long been central to how creators, publishers, and brands use the platform to drive users to websites, videos, and products.
Social media analyst Matt Navarra, who said he was among those notified on December 16, said the test shows Meta is placing more core functionality behind a paywall.
“This isn’t really about verification as much as about bundling survival features behind a subscription,” Navarra told the BBC.
Meta Verified is already a paid service that offers a blue check, additional account support, and impersonation protection on both Facebook and Instagram.
“If Facebook is a part of your growth or traffic strategy, that access now has a price tag attached to it,” Navarra said.
