Development on Fallout 5 is reportedly going ahead, but it might be a different team handling the project as Bethesda is tied up with their other major games.
Despite the success of the Amazon TV show, there hasn’t been a new Fallout game since 2018’s Fallout 76. It was previously thought that we wouldn’t see a new entry in the post-apocalyptic series for some time, either, as Todd Howard previously stated that work wouldn’t begin until The Elder Scrolls 6 was done.
However, following a leak that revealed multiple remakes are in the works, it appears that the long-rumored Fallout 5 could be going ahead earlier than anticipated, albeit with a different team of developers taking the lead.
Leaker claims that Fallout 5 is in the works
In an episode of the Xbox Two Podcast, Windows Central Executive Editor and industry insider Jez Corden revealed that Fallout 5 has been greenlit and work is going ahead. However, it reportedly came at the expense of the MMO being developed by ZeniMax Online (Elder Scrolls Online), which has now been scrapped.
This was apparently due to the notoriously high costs of making and supporting an MMO over many years, compared to the”surefire win” of a new Fallout game.
“From what I heard, it was a case of ‘Do we want to sink a ton of money into getting this to a point where it can compete with the established players in the market, or do we want to allocate that investment towards making Fallout 5?'”
Corden went on to speculate that a new studio would be formed to handle the project, given that Bethesda Game Studios is still hard at work on huge games.
“The core teams of Bethesda right now, they’re working on Starfield DLC, and also Elder Scrolls 6 is full steam ahead. Obviously that’s a very important game for Microsoft as well,” he continued. “If it’s true, then I would assume that you’re spinning up a new team for that, right?”
However, he also made it clear that he doesn’t have enough information to fully verify that a new team is being put together, so take that part of the claim with a “pinch of salt.”
