Creator of the first Fallout, Tim Cain, has shared behind-the-scenes insight into his day-to-day life while working on the original game, including detailing the long hours he spent helping to make the iconic RPG.

In his A Typical Day of Making Fallout video on YouTube, Cain said he regularly worked 12-hour days at Interplay, often commuting to and from work in the dark depending on the time of year.

He explained that he nearly left the studio before his salary was raised to what he described as the “bare minimum” needed to qualify for a mortgage.

“Everything I made went into paying my household expenses. I was literally, in the ’90s, living paycheck to paycheck. I know a lot of you do that. I was doing that too,” he said.

While he already worked long hours during the week, Cain said he also worked Saturdays, using the extra time to create features requested by other developers.

While Sundays were initially kept free for personal errands, Cain said the final six months of development required full weekends of work due to the amount left to do.

He noted that his extensive note-taking during Fallout’s development is what allowed him to recall these details years later, adding that while the schedule would be viewed differently today, he enjoyed the experience but was “glad things have changed.”

“I know some of you are like horrified, but all I can tell you is no one was telling us to do this. We wanted to do it. We loved what we were doing and loved what we were making.”
