The Fallout Season 2 ending has fans theorizing that players themselves appeared in the last episode during a major moment.

The finale brought the show’s sophomore season to a close with plenty of references to the 2010 New Vegas game after it brought the iconic city to life as part of Lucy MacLean’s (Ella Purnell) journey to stop her nefarious father’s mysterious plans.

Dexerto’s Fallout Season 2 review called it a “ruthless, pulse-pounding roadtrip,” and that’s never more clearer than the finale, whether it’s Maximus (Aaron Moten) taking on a pack of Deathclaws by himself, or the Ghoul (Walton Goggins) facing a new journey across the nuclear wasteland.

The timeline of the series means that it takes place a number of years after games like Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, but fans think one scene features one of the characters who players become in the franchise. Spoilers ahead!

Fans think the Courier from New Vegas saved Maximus in the Fallout Season 2 finale

The Fallout Season 2 ending theory suggests the Courier is the one who saves Maximus from the Deathclaw during his last stand in Freeside. During the scene, Maximus’ New California Republic Power Armor gets heavily damaged during the brawl, and he decides to take one last stand against the monsters using a pool cue and an old roulette wheel as a shield.

But when the Deathclaw charges, a random bullet stops it dead in its tracks. Maximus turns to see an NCR Ranger up high using a sniper rifle. It’s a recreation of the New Vegas introduction which depicts a ranger in New Vegas shooting a raider. Some fans assume that the character seen in the original trailer is intended to be their character, known only as Courier 6. The theory about the Maximus scene started on Reddit, with one Fallout fan succinctly explaining the idea.

“I had that split second where I 100% believed it was him because also if they were going to put the Courier in the show, they would absolutely have him show up in an outfit that completely concealed his appearance, have him do something incredibly badass like instantly kill two Deathclaws to save a main protagonist, then immediately leave without saying a word,” they wrote.

When other Redditers debated the theory, one person added: “Everyone really liked the armor so basically everyone wore it when they played the game. So, they associate it with the courier.”

A third suggested that it seems unlikely the show will ever canonize the players’ characters because it would reveal a definitive ending for those games. They explained: “I doubt we will ever see or hear about the courier or anyone who could still be alive that has met them/befriended them. They want players to be able to maintain their own endings & stories for their courier w/out setting in stone as to what happened to them.”

But not every Fallout fan agrees, as another chimed in: “It was if you want it to be,” which seems like the most reasonable idea when dealing with open-ended stories that rely on player decisions.
