Fantastic Four: First Steps director Matt Shakman has been speaking about IMAX presentations of the movie, saying that the film’s aspect ratio will change when “the largest thing in the universe” – Galactus – is onscreen.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is a unique Marvel movie, in that it plays out in an alternate and retro-futuristic version of Planet Earth.
Entertainment Weekly described it as follows: “In our timeline, the ’50s and ’60s were full of artists and thinkers who imagined utopian futures full of miracle inventions like flying cars and robot friends. In this world, Reed Richards exists to invent them.”
But that’s not all that’s different, as the film features planet-devouring villain Galactus, and to capture the scale and size of that character, the aspect ratio will change during the movie.
“World adjusts” for arrival of Galactus in Fantastic Four: First Steps
While discussing the movie in a promotional video for IMAX, director Matt Shakman revealed when and why the screen will expand for the story’s antagonist.
“The world of Fantastic Four is so big, that it naturally lends itself to IMAX,” says Shakman. “We designed the movie to be entirely in IMAX. You’re going into space, but you’re also in Manhattan, which is a vertical city, and we captured that scale.
“Then you have the largest thing in the universe, and the world adjusts. This movie celebrates the IMAX format, and you’ll feel that on the big-screen.”
Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige also pops up in the video, stating that “we’re doing something very unique” with The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
