Five new suspects have been arrested by French police following the theft of crown jewels from the Louvre Museum. However, the jewellery is still missing.
On October 23, a daring raid on the iconic Louvre Museum in Paris, France, stunned the world as over $100 million worth of jewelry was stolen.
The heist, which went down in broad daylight, appeared to be done by a team of professionals – just like something out of Ocean’s Eleven. A truck-mounted lift was used to get the thieves into the museum before they escaped on motorbikes.
One man was arrested on October 25 at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport, while another was arrested at his home in Aubervilliers, a suburb north of Paris. Now, a further five arrests have been made. However, the jewels are still in the wild.
$102m jewels still missing from Louvre robbery
On October 30, the Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau announced that five more suspects were detained on October 29.
One of the five arrested is suspected of being part of the team that entered the museum to grab the jewels. However, no further details about their identities have been revealed by French officials.
“Searches last night and overnight did not allow us to find the goods,” Beccuau told RTL Radio. As per RTL Radio and the Associated Press, the prosecutor does not suspect that the thieves had help from Louvre staff.
“These jewels are now, of course, unsellable. Anyone who buys them would be guilty of concealment of stolen goods. There’s still time to give them back,” Beccuau added.
Museum director Laurence des Cars told French senators that the surveillance system at the Louvre is “aging” and staff could not detect the thieves as the robbery was going down.
The search for the jewels remains ongoing, but French officials are not announcing where they’re looking, or exactly who they’re looking for.
