A Florida man was arrested for DUI after driving a riding lawn mower on a toll road while under the influence.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident happened around 8:30 a.m. on July 18, along the Suncoast Parkway near the U.S. 98 exit in Hernando County. Troopers responded after receiving multiple calls about a man riding a lawnmower on the shoulder of the highway.

When officers arrived, they found 38-year-old Christopher Spain still on the mower. He showed several signs of impairment, including pinpoint pupils, flushed skin, dry mouth, and throat irritation.

Refused sobriety test

Troopers say Spain was “sniffing, clearing his throat and spitting” during the encounter. He attempted field sobriety tests three times before refusing to continue. He also declined to provide a urine sample following his arrest.

Spain was booked into the Hernando County Jail and later released on a $500 bond. He was charged with DUI and cited for operating a vehicle on a limited-access facility.

Florida law treats riding lawn mowers as motor vehicles in DUI cases. Similar arrests have occurred in the past, including cases where individuals were caught operating mowers while intoxicated on public roads.
