Former Twitch executive djWHEAT has spoken out after CEO Dan Clancy promoted his own Twitch channel in other streamers’ chats during a charity marathon.

Clancy, who was participating in the GCX Marathon to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, entered multiple Twitch streams ahead of his slot on July 18 and dropped messages asking for raids. Some streamers’ mods timed him out for the behavior, which many called inappropriate.

His message, posted in multiple chats, read: “I am shamelessly going into chat of streamers I know to ask for raids when they are done. I am doing my first charity stream for St. Jude as part of the GCX Marathon.”

djWHEAT says Dan Clancy’s self-promotion “angers” him

djWHEAT, who previously served as Director of Creator Development at Twitch, criticized the approach on X.

“I can’t believe it. This goes against every bit of teaching I ever deployed while working at Twitch and it’s just gross. It actually angers me,” he said.

“There was a time, though, when it wasn’t like this at all. It just seems like two steps in the wrong direction. It is basic decency that you just don’t do this, so it’s disappointing to see in any capacity.”

Clancy’s stream ultimately raised over $4,000, while the GCX Marathon had surpassed $350,000 in total donations. Despite the success, several creators, including GCX co-founder Gothalion, who called out the CEO’s actions in a series of tweets.
