Fortnite is reviving one of the internet’s weirdest viral hits, and no one can quite figure out why.

Fortnite has always had a weirdly soft spot for internet jokes. From Rickrolls and Gangnam Style to the full Skibidi Toilet skin and cosmetics bundle, it’s built an empire out of meme nostalgia.

Now Epic Games is going even deeper into the archives, pulling out a track most people thought had been buried back in 2016.

That of a Japanese comedian in leopard print who danced his way into global fame with a song about fruit and stationery. Yes, Pen Pineapple Apple Pen is on its way to Fortnite.

Fortnite Festival teases Pen Pineapple Apple Pen collab

On September 7, leaks surfaced pointing to a Pen Pineapple Apple Pen track coming to Fortnite.

Hours later, the official Fortnite Festival account on X posted a single cryptic line of emojis: a pen, a pineapple, an apple, and a pen. You don’t need to be chronically online to know what that means.

But for anyone who missed the 2016 phenomenon, the PPAP video starred Pikotaro repeating the same hypnotic verse over a beat so simple it broke the internet. If Fortnite adds it as a track, you can expect plenty of players jamming to nostalgia or muting their lobbies.

The crossover seems to be locked in. What’s less certain is how it’ll appear. The leak suggests it’s a Jam Track, a song players can perform on the game’s Rock Band-style mini-game, rather than a headline performance.

Reaction has been split, to put it mildly. “2016 is that way,” one player wrote in response to the teaser. Another added, “If this is the only Jam Track, we’re gonna kill you.”

Others joked, “An old meme that no one talks about. So happy for the one person that asked for this song.” A few begged for more: “Screw getting a Jam Track. Give us the emote.”
